Related Tools
Groups words from a list that use exactly the same letters, so listen and silent come back together. Each word's letters are sorted into a key and the keys are matched in the page; your word list is compared locally and never leaves the tab.
How to use it
- Paste the words into the box, one per line or separated by commas.
- Press Find Anagrams.
- Read the groups under Anagram Groups, then use Copy Output to move them elsewhere.
Worked example
listen
silent
enlist
tinselbecomesFound 1 anagram group:
listen, silent, enlist, tinsel
Each line of the output is one group, and the line ends with a newline. Words are lower-cased before being printed, even if you typed them in capitals.
cat
act
dog
catbecomesFound 1 anagram group:
cat, act
The repeated cat collapses to a single mention, and dog never appears because it has no partner with the same letters.
hello
worldbecomesNo anagram groups found. Try different words. Two unrelated words produce this message rather than an empty list.
When to use it
- Checking whether two names or two spellings are letter-identical.
- Sweeping a username or vocabulary list for pairs that a spambot could use as interchangeable aliases.
- Verifying a word-game answer where you suspect the same set of tiles appears twice.
What it does not do
- It compares only the words you paste. There is no dictionary, so it can never find an anagram of a single word.
- Only the letters a-z count. Accents, digits and punctuation are stripped before the letters are sorted, so café is compared as caf, and a token made only of digits or symbols is skipped.
- Words shorter than three characters still raise the group count but are left out of the printed line, so a pair of two-letter words can be counted without appearing anywhere.
- A group needs at least two different words. Typing the same word twice reports nothing, and the printed order follows the order you typed rather than the alphabet.
