Related Tools
This counter recalculates as you type unless you switch live updates off. It reports characters with and without spaces, words, lines, paragraphs and sentences, plus reading time at 200 words per minute and speaking time at 130, both rounded up to whole minutes. The numbers are string operations on the textarea's current contents.
How to use it
- Type or paste text into the box - the statistics appear immediately while Live update as you type is ticked.
- Untick the checkbox to stop the counting, then press Count when you want a fresh read.
- Press Copy Output to take the eight-line summary.
Worked example
Hello world. This is a test.
Second paragraph here!becomesCharacters (with spaces): 52
Characters (no spaces): 43
Words: 9
Lines: 3
Paragraphs: 2
Sentences: 3
Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Estimated speaking time: 1 minuteThis is the live result for a two-paragraph input; the sample text loaded in the box is not counted until you type or press Count.
When to use it
- Drafting a post and watching the word total as it grows.
- Keeping an essay under a school word limit while you write it.
- Estimating how long a script will take to read aloud, using the 130 wpm speaking figure.
What it does not do
- The other page with this title (slug word-counter) counts only when you press Process and adds per-sentence averages, the longest word and social and meta length checks; this one is the live counter that also includes lines and paragraphs.
- Reading and speaking times round up, so nine words reports 1 minute rather than a fraction.
- Sentence counting splits on . ! and ? alone, so "Dr. Smith" and decimals such as 3.14 push the sentence total up.
- Clear restores the built-in sample text rather than emptying the box.
