YAML To XML Converter🔒 100% local
YAML to XML conversion. Privacy-first, no server uploads, no tracking.
Parses YAML with the same small parser used elsewhere on the site and re-emits the structure as XML: one element per key, repeated item elements for entries in a list, self-closing tags for null values, and ampersand, angle brackets and double quotes escaped in text. Keys that are not legal XML names are rewritten with underscores. The conversion is local - the pasted YAML is read in the page and the XML string is the only thing produced.
How to use it
- Paste a YAML map into the input box, then press Process.
- Read the result: it opens with how many top-level elements were emitted, then the XML declaration and the document under a root element.
- Copy the XML with Copy Output; clear both boxes with Clear.
Worked example
name: John
age: 30becomesConverted YAML to XML - 2 top-level elements.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<root>
<name>John</name>
<age>30</age>
</root>The first line ends with an em dash on the page; it is shown here as a hyphen.
msg: "a & b <c>"
empty:
n: 1.5becomesConverted YAML to XML - 3 top-level elements.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<root>
<msg>a & b <c></msg>
<empty/>
<n>1.5</n>
</root>Special characters are escaped and an empty value becomes a self-closing tag.
When to use it
- Feeding a small config file to a tool that still expects XML instead of YAML.
- Producing an XML sample from a YAML payload so a downstream consumer can be tested before the real integration exists.
- Spotting escaping problems early - an ampersand or angle bracket in a YAML value shows up in the XML output immediately.
What it does not do
- The document root must be a map. A top-level list is refused with 'YAML must be a top-level object/map to become XML.', so '- a' followed by '- b' produces an error rather than XML.
- Every list entry becomes an element named item, so names carried inside list values are lost and the XML cannot describe which record is which.
- The summary line says '1 top-level elements' - the plural is hard-coded whatever the count.
- Numbers, booleans and nulls become plain text with no type attribute, there is no way to rename an element, and no schema is applied. Whatever the YAML parser misreads (a hash inside a quoted value, say) is faithfully converted into XML.
