Byte Storage Converter🔒 100% local
Convert between byte storage units (B, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, EB, ZB, YB) with both binary (1024) and decimal (1000) standards.
Related Tools
Converts a number between byte units by scaling into bytes and back out, with the 1024-based units (B through YB) and the 1000-based SI units in the same two dropdowns. The swap button reverses source and target. It is one multiplication and one division: no unit is guessed from the input text and no rounding is applied to the result.
How to use it
- Enter the number in the value field.
- Pick the source unit and the target unit, taking care to choose the row that says SI when you mean decimal.
- Press Convert, and use the swap button to run the same pair the other way round.
Worked example
1024 B to KBbecomes11024 / 1024; the binary kilobyte is an exact power of two.
1.5 TB to GBbecomes15361.5 x 1024^4 / 1024^3, computed in Node.
1 MB (SI) to MBbecomes0.95367431640625A decimal megabyte is 1000000 bytes against the binary 1048576, so the same label gives a smaller number when the SI row is the source.
When to use it
- Checking a disk-usage figure against the number a cloud console shows, where one is decimal and the other binary.
- Converting a file-size limit into bytes for a validation rule in code.
- Explaining why a 500 GB drive shows as roughly 465 GB: two rows of the dropdown are the two standards.
What it does not do
- The SI list stops at the terabyte. Decimal petabytes and above are not offered, so every unit above TB in these dropdowns is 1024-based.
- Every result is the raw JavaScript number turned into a string, so long or repeating decimals come out in full or in exponent notation, with no fixed precision and no thousands separators.
- The unit must come from the dropdown. Typing 4GB into the value field is not parsed, and a non-numeric value only says to enter a valid number.
- Only storage units are handled. Bits, bits per second and network throughput need a different tool.
