Randomize the order of list items. Optional seed for reproducible shuffling.

Reorders a pasted list with a Fisher-Yates shuffle and returns it three ways: the original order, the new order on a single comma-separated line, and the new order as a line-by-line list to copy. Blank lines are dropped and each item is trimmed first. Type a number into the seed field and the same list always comes out in the same order; leave the seed empty and the current timestamp is used, so every run differs.
How to use it
- Paste the items, one per line.
- Optionally enter a seed number, which makes the order repeatable.
- Press Shuffle and copy whichever of the three output blocks suits what you are doing.
Worked example
Ada
Grace
Linus
Margaret
Alan
seed: 7becomesOriginal (5 items):
Ada, Grace, Linus, Margaret, Alan
Shuffled (5 items):
Grace, Margaret, Ada, Alan, Linus
Shuffled list:
Grace
Margaret
Ada
Alan
LinusFive names with seed 7. The same five names and the same seed give this exact order next time; clear the seed and the order changes with the clock.
When to use it
- Running a standup slot or a giveaway draw in a chat channel where people can re-run it, with a fixed seed so the result can be checked afterwards.
- Reordering rows of test data so an ordering assumption in your code gets exercised.
- Shuffling the answer options in a quiz so the correct one is not always first.
What it does not do
- The generator is a small linear congruential formula, not a cryptographic random source. Do not use it for anything worth winning, for lotteries with real stakes, or for generating secrets.
- Duplicates are shuffled as separate items. Paste a name twice and it appears twice in the draw, so a list with repeated entries is not a fair draw over names.
- The one-line blocks join items with a comma, so any item containing a comma turns that line ambiguous once copied. Use the line-by-line block at the bottom instead.
- It reorders and does nothing else: no way to exclude an item, weight an entry, keep a partial order, or combine several lists before shuffling.
