Word Counter runs once, when you press Process, and returns a statistics block for the text as given: words, characters with and without whitespace, sentences, paragraphs, average words per sentence, the longest word, and reading and speaking estimates at 238 and 140 words per minute. It closes with three length checks against a 280-character post, a 160-character meta description and a 60-character SEO title.
How to use it
- Paste the text you want measured.
- Press Process.
- Read the counts, the timing estimates and the three limit checks, then Copy Output for the whole block.
Worked example
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.becomes=== Word Count ===
Words: 9
Characters: 44
Characters (no ws): 36
Sentences: 1
Paragraphs: 1
Avg words/sentence: 9.0
Longest word: quick
Reading time: 2 sec (238 wpm)
Speaking time: 4 sec (140 wpm)
Limits check:
Twitter/X post: ✓ fits (236 left)
Meta description: ✓ fits (44/160)
SEO title: ✓ fits (44/60)Estimates below one minute are shown in seconds rather than as a fraction of a minute.
When to use it
- Trimming a page title or meta description until both fit their character budgets.
- Checking a paragraph against the legacy 280-character post limit.
- Getting an average sentence length for a document as a rough readability signal.
What it does not do
- Nothing appears until you press Process. If you want counts that update on every keystroke and include line and paragraph totals, use the other Word Counter page (slug word-count).
- The three limit checks are character counts, not words or bytes, and 280 is the legacy post limit rather than a per-account one.
- Sentences split on a closing . ! or ? followed by whitespace or the end of the text, so "Mr. Smith called." is reported as two sentences.
- Reading and speaking time switch to seconds below one minute, so a short line reports seconds instead of a rounded-up minute.
