Cuts a block of text to a fixed number of characters and returns two versions: a hard slice of exactly the limit, and a word-aware cut that trims back to the last whole word and appends an ellipsis. Append a comma and a number to set the limit, or omit it to use 100.
How to use it
- Paste the text, optionally followed by a comma and the length you want, for example Hello World, 5.
- Press Process.
- Compare the Hard cut line with the Word-aware line and copy whichever you need.
Worked example
The quick brown fox, 10becomesInput: 19 chars (limit 10)
Hard cut: The quick
Word-aware: The quick…
Truncated 9 chars.Hard cut keeps the raw ten-character slice including the trailing space; the word-aware line drops back to the last complete word.
Hello World, 5becomesInput: 11 chars (limit 5)
Hard cut: Hello
Word-aware: Hello…
Truncated 6 chars. With only one space in range, the word-aware cut trims to the first word and still adds the ellipsis.
When to use it
- Fitting a title or a meta description into a character limit.
- Building a preview snippet from the start of a longer body of text.
- Checking where a word-aware cut would land before truncating on the server.
What it does not do
- The length must be a whole number sitting at the very end of the input after a comma. Text that genuinely ends in a comma and a number is treated as a length, not as content.
- The word-aware branch adds a single ellipsis character (…), not three full stops, so it may not match copy that expects dots.
- A single long token with no spaces, such as a URL or a hash, is cut mid-token in both branches because there is no whitespace to trim back to.
- The limit is applied to the raw characters of the input, so blank lines and indentation count toward the length just like letters do.
