Read text aloud with browser TTS. Privacy-first, no server uploads, no tracking.
Related Tools
The page does two separate jobs. Process counts the words, characters and sentences in your text and estimates a speaking time; the Speak button hands the same text to your operating system's installed voices through the browser's SpeechSynthesis API. No server synthesises the audio - your own machine does the talking, and the counts are computed in the tab.
How to use it
- Type or paste the text you want read aloud.
- Press Process to get the word count and estimated duration.
- Press Speak to hear it through the browser's default voice at rate 1.0.
- Press Stop to cut playback, or Clear to reset both boxes.
Worked example
Hello WorldbecomesReady to speak 2 words (11 chars, 1 sentence).
Estimated duration: ~1s at average rate.Verified: 2 words is 0.0133 minutes at the tool's assumed 150 words per minute, rounded to 1 second. Process prints this report only and makes no sound.
Hello there. How are you today?becomesReady to speak 6 words (31 chars, 2 sentences).
Estimated duration: ~2s at average rate.Sentences are counted by splitting on ., ! and ?.
When to use it
- Checking whether a script fits a time budget before recording a voiceover.
- Having a long article or a proofread read back to you while you do something else.
- Hearing awkward phrasing that your eye skips when you read silently.
What it does not do
- Process and Speak are separate steps: running Process gives the preview but does not start playback, and Speak ignores whatever Process printed.
- The duration estimate is fixed at 150 words per minute, while playback rate is hard-coded to 1.0, so real timings vary with whichever voice your system supplies.
- Anything over 200 characters is truncated in the preview even though the full text is still spoken.
- There are no controls for voice, speed or pitch, and the available voices are whatever your OS and browser ship with - some Linux builds and headless environments have none at all.
