When to use it
- Checking the word count of a paragraph before pasting it into a form with a limit.
- Finding which terms recur in a draft so you can vary the vocabulary when editing.
- Estimating how long a script takes to read aloud or say on camera.
What it does not do
- Sentences are counted by splitting on . ! and ? only, so an abbreviation like Dr. or a URL with a full stop inflates the count.
- Paragraphs come from blank-line separation, so a single unbroken block always reports Paragraphs: 1 even when it spans many lines.
- Words are split on whitespace, so hyphenated compounds and web addresses each count as one word.
