Checks text two ways: strictly, by reversing the exact string, and relaxed, by lowercasing and removing everything that is not a-z or 0-9 first. It prints both verdicts, the reversed string and the cleaned string so you can see why the two answers differ. The default input is "racecar".
How to use it
- Type or paste the text into the box.
- Press Process to get the Verdict line, the two individual check lines and the Reversed and Cleaned strings.
- Read the Cleaned line - it is what the relaxed comparison actually ran on.
Worked example
racecarbecomesInput: racecar
Verdict: β YES β a strict palindrome
Strict check: β same forwards & backwards
Relaxed check: β same after removing case & non-alphanumerics
Reversed: racecar
Cleaned: racecarA man, a plan, a canal: PanamabecomesInput: A man, a plan, a canal: Panama
Verdict: β YES β a palindrome (ignoring case/punctuation)
Strict check: β differs reversed
Relaxed check: β same after removing case & non-alphanumerics
Reversed: amanaP :lanac a ,nalp a ,nam A
Cleaned: amanaplanacanalpanama
Tip: counts as a palindrome the way "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama" does. When to use it
- Settling a word-puzzle or crossword argument.
- Checking whether an ID, plate or serial reads the same both ways.
- Showing the difference between strict and punctuation-ignoring palindrome tests.
What it does not do
- The relaxed pass deletes anything outside a-z and 0-9 rather than folding it, so accented and non-Latin letters vanish: "naΓ―ve" is compared as "nave". A string can pass or fail depending on which characters the cleaner throws away.
- The strict test is exact after only a leading and trailing trim, so case and punctuation count - "Racecar" fails the strict check but passes the relaxed one.
- Digits are kept, so "12321" counts as a palindrome in both checks while a phrase such as "2 words" does not.
- A single character or an empty relaxation is edge-case territory: an input that reduces to nothing (for example punctuation only) reports as not a palindrome rather than as trivially symmetric.
