Converts between plain text and International Morse code, deciding the direction from what is in the box: input made only of dots, dashes, spaces and slashes is decoded, and anything else is encoded. Letters are separated by a single space and words by a slash. The table covers A to Z, the ten digits and about twenty punctuation marks, and a character outside it comes back as the Unicode replacement character.
How to use it
- Type text such as SOS, or paste Morse such as ... --- ...
- Press Process, then read the result in the output box.
- Press Copy Output. Round-tripping your own output is the quickest way to check a message you were given.
Worked example
SOSbecomes... --- ...Pasting that result straight back into the box decodes it to SOS, because the input is then made only of dots, dashes and spaces.
Hello Worldbecomes.... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..The slash marks the word break, dividing HELLO from WORLD. The input is upper-cased first, so case is not preserved on the way back.
When to use it
- Encoding a message for a puzzle, a card or a treasure-hunt clue.
- Checking a Morse string you received against the standard letter table.
- Producing a short encoded string for a design mock-up.
What it does not do
- The direction is guessed from the characters present, so a run of only dots and dashes is always decoded. Two hyphens meant as text come back as the letter M rather than being encoded.
- Unknown characters are substituted silently, which is easy to miss inside a longer string.
- Word breaks are recognised only as two or more spaces or a spaced slash, so ordinary single-spaced Morse decodes as one long word.
- There is no audio and no timing here; the separate morse-code-synthesizer tool adds a duration estimate and a unit count.
- Prosigns such as SK and AR, accented letters and emoji are not supported, and an unrecognised code group decodes to the replacement character instead of being reported.
