Pulls the readable words out of a piece of markup: HTML comments are deleted first, then every <...> tag, and the leftover runs of spaces and line breaks are squeezed into single spaces. The work is a regex pass inside this page, which is the point - you can strip a client's email draft or an unreleased page without handing it to a converter that keeps a copy.
How to use it
- Paste the markup into the Input box.
- Press Process.
- Copy the plain text out of the Output box and check the joins where inline tags used to be.
Worked example
<div class="test"><p>Hello <b>World</b></p><!-- comment --></div>becomesHello WorldThe comment is removed before the tag pass runs, and inline tags leave no whitespace of their own, so the two words join with one space.
<p>First</p>
<p>Second</p>becomesFirst SecondBlock tags are not turned into line breaks - the paragraphs run together into a single line.
When to use it
- Extracting the text of a copied article or newsletter so it can go into a plain-text field.
- Checking what a scraper or a text-only email client would read on a page you are building.
- Reducing a set of HTML fragments to plain strings for a test fixture.
What it does not do
- It is a regex, not an HTML parser. A > inside an attribute ends the tag early, so <a title="a > b">x</a> comes back as b">x.
- Script and style bodies survive because their contents are not tags - inline JavaScript or CSS lands in your text.
- Entities are not decoded: AT&T stays AT&T and is not turned into a space.
- Every whitespace run collapses, so table layout, indentation and deliberate line breaks are gone.
- Unclosed or overlapping tags that a browser would auto-correct are taken literally here.
