Decodes a Base64 string into readable text, treating the decoded bytes as UTF-8. You paste the string, press Process, and the characters appear in the box below; the decode is done in the page and the string is not saved or sent.
How to use it
- Paste the Base64 string into the input box. The box arrives pre-filled with a short sample payload.
- Press Process. Anything the decoder cannot parse comes back as Invalid Base64.
- Use Copy Output to move the decoded text, or Clear to start again.
Worked example
SGVsbG8sIFdvcmxkIQpUaGlzIGlzIHNhbXBsZSB0ZXh0IHRvIGVuY29kZS4=becomesHello, World!
This is sample text to encode.The payload holds a newline, so the decoded output is two lines. This is the sample the box is pre-filled with.
8J+agA==becomes🚀The bytes are decoded as UTF-8, so a four-byte emoji comes back as a single character rather than four odd ones.
not base64!!becomesInvalid Base64One message covers every kind of bad input.
When to use it
- A deployment log shows an encoded value and you want to know whether it is readable text before writing a parser for it.
- Checking that a payload captured from an HTTP header or a queue message decodes to the JSON you expect.
- Reading a small text blob out of a configuration value without opening a terminal.
What it does not do
- Despite file in the name, this page returns text. There is no download button, no file name and no MIME detection; the Base64 Converter's decode tab is the one with a download path.
- Binary payloads generally fail. An image or an archive decodes to bytes that are not valid UTF-8, and the whole result becomes the single message Invalid Base64.
- Whitespace inside the string is tolerated, but nothing else is, and URL-safe Base64 using - or _ is rejected along with everything else.
- The error never says where the problem is, so a long string has to be bisected by hand or checked with another tool.
